Amy's Bread Pink Vanilla on Vanilla Cake

Amy's Bread Pink Vanilla on Vanilla Cake, $2.50, http://www.amysbread.com/, 9th Ave and 46th Street

Taste: The pink vanilla frosting is very sugary and sweet-- no vanilla taste, just a straight sugar rush. The cake does have a nice vanilla taste though, lightly sweet with strong and delicious vanilla flavoring throughout. Together, they make for a tasty, super-sweet cupcake, albeit leaving me with a strong confectioner's sugar taste in my mouth. Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 Sprinkles

Texture:
The icing is smooth and thick, and the cake is lightly moist and has the texture of a sponge cake, very springy. Overall Texture Rating: 4 out of 5 Sprinkles

Aesthetic:
What a beautiful cupcake! The icing is perfectly swirled, and generously, and the light pink color gives it some extra appeal and excitement for a vanilla cupcake, with a few multi-colored sprinkles on top. 4.5 out of 5 Sprinkles

Satisfaction:
This cupcake was just a little too sweet for me-- it was delicious, but the sugar content was overkill-- especially because the icing was so generously swirled on top, usually I love extra icing, but this was a touch too sweet even for me. But it was very tasty, and if you're a sugar lover, this is a great cupcake to satisfy a sweet tooth! I also was impressed with the value, at $2.50 for a pretty large cupcake. Amy's Bread Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Amy's Bread Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake, $2.50, http://www.amysbread.com/, 9th Ave and 46th Street

Taste: My first thought when I taste the chocolate frosting is that it tastes like real milk chocolate. Most other chocolate frostings I've tried taste like either cocoa powder or bittersweet chocolate, but this tastes like delicious milk chocolate, sweet while at the same time ultra-chocolatey. It's so chocolatey it definitely requires the accompaniment of a glass of milk, but luckily I'm prepared with milk to wash down the chocolate goodness! The flavor of the vanilla cake is also fantastic-- it's lightly sweet, with a nice vanilla flavor, so tasty that it could be enjoyed alone without frosting! (Something that won't have to be done with this particular cupcake given the great quantity of icing it has!) Overall Taste Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Sprinkles!

Texture:
The frosting is very soft and smooth, and the cake is slightly moist and a bit spongey, like a sponge cake. I like the textures in my mouth, but the cake is a little bit crumbly and I make a slight mess in eating the cupcake. Overall Texture Rating: 4 out of 5 Sprinkles

Aesthetic:
This cupcake is a beauty! The frosting has a rich chocolate brown color with a nice gloss to it, and it is generously applied in a perfectly even swirl, with a few sprinkles adorning it for decoration. The frosting is so generously applied that the cake part is small in comparison, a little stump holding up a a giant heap of frosting! Overall Aesthetic Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Sprinkles

Satisfaction:
This cupcake was very tasty!! It was also a large cupcake, and at $2.50, the same price charged for many smaller cupcakes at other bakeries, I felt it was an excellent value. I would definitely return to Amy's Bread for more cupcakes anytime! It looked great, tasted great, and the price was right!! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 5 out of 5 Sprinkles!

Cupcake Cafe Mocha Buttercream on Chocolate Cake

Beautiful Mocha Frosting on Chocolate Cake Cupcakes all in a row:
You can see the chocolate frosted cupcakes that I did not sample on the rack below the mocha:
The specific mocha frosted chocolate cupcake I sampled:
The mocha cupcake I sampled, pictured on the right:

Cupcake Cafe Mocha Frosting on Chocolate Cake, $2.50, http://www.cupcakecafe-nyc.com/?KMLID=6140, 9th Ave and 40th Street

Taste: The mocha buttercream is really unique and interesting-- it's a nice mocha, sweet and yet coffee-flavored at the same time-- it reminds me of the flavor of coffee ice cream. The white flower on top is regular vanilla buttercream, which I like even better than the mocha buttercream-- sweet yet light and milky. The chocolate cake is where this cupcake lost me-- bitter, not sweet, just not pleasing to my palate. Overall Taste Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture:
The buttercream is incredibly light-- it must be whipped, and might be the french recipe that uses egg whites to achieve a perfectly fluffy, light meringue-buttercream. It melts on my tongue into utter deliciousness. The cake texture is a little bit dry, but it moistens up nicely in my mouth and it holds together well. The cake is very dense, which I don't love in a cupcake. Overall Texture Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles

Aesthetic:
The Cupcake Cafe cupcakes are beautifully decorated! They sell a variety of cupcakes with different multi-colored flowers decorating the top, and they are breathtaking. These are the kind of cupcakes that would be perfect to serve for a special occasion, artistically done and the sort of specialty cupcake it's not easy to re-create at home. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!!

Satisfaction:
The taste of this cucpake wasn't stellar, but it's beauty was unparalleled! And for such a gorgeous cupcake, I felt like $2.50 was a steal price for it! There is no disputing that the Cupcake Cafe knows how to make gorgeous confections!!! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Cupcake Cafe Vanilla Buttercream on Vanilla Cake

Cupcake Cafe Vanilla Frosting on Vanilla Cake (pictured above, left), $2.50, http://www.cupcakecafe-nyc.com/?KMLID=6140, 9th Ave and 40th Street

Taste: The vanilla buttercream is very mild, slightly sweet, very milky-- and I really like it! It's a sophisticated buttercream, not too sweet but really scrumptious and satisfying. The vanilla cake is pretty good-- not especially flavorful, understated, but pleasant. If you don't like ultra-sweet cupcakes, this cupcake is a great choice, because it's not too sweet but it's very tasty. Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture:
The buttercream is incredibly light for a buttercream, and I would guess it's the French style that uses egg whites and milk in the recipe. The cake is really dense, it's not dry but it's not moist either, right in between, but a little dense for a cupcake in my opinion. Overall Texture Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Aesthetic:
Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous, is how I would describe Cupcake Cafe cupcakes!!! Absolutely beautiful, the exact sort of treat anyone would want to serve for a special occasion. Artistic, upscale, just beautiful. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 5 out of 5 Sprinkles!!

Satisfaction:
The beauty of this cupcake alone wins it a lot of points for me, even though it wasn't the best tasting cupcake I've sampled. But I'd definitely buy these cupcakes to serve to guests for a special occasion!! I also thought the price was really reasonable for something so professional and handcrafted at $2.50. The gorgeous array of offerings at Cupcake Cafe:

Burgers and Cupcakes Vanilla Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Vanilla Cake with Vanilla Frosting from Burgers and Cupcakes, $2.50, http://www.burgersandcupcakes.us/, 9th Avenue and 34th Street

Taste: The frosting is really super sweet, but delicious, a pure and rich vanilla. The vanilla cake is pleasant but not overly flavorful or sweet. Without blueberries baked in like in the blueberry cupcake, it's not quite as tasty. Overall Taste Rating: 3.5 out of 5 sprinkles.

Texture: The frosting is really thick and creamy, slightly hardened on the outside but melts wonderfully on my tongue. The cake texture is medium-- not dry but not super moist. Overall Texture Rating: 3.5 out of 5 sprinkles

Aesthetic: A uniquely conical appearance, with icing heaped ontop generously in a conical heap about three inches high, adorned with rainbow sprinkles. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 4 out of 5 Sprinkles

Satisfaction: This was a tasty cupcake, without a doubt. There wasn't anything unique or special about it, but for a classic vanilla on vanilla cupcake, it was definitely satisfying and sweet, and does the trick for a sweet tooth fix! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles.

Overall Cupcake Ranking: 15 Sprinkles (out of 20 possible)

Burgers and Cupcakes Blueberry Cupcake

Blueberry Cupcake from Burgers and Cupcakes, $2.50, http://www.burgersandcupcakes.us/, 9th Avenue and 34th Street

Taste:
The frosting is delicious-- very sweet but scrumptious. Though it is very slightly tinted blue, it tastes just vanilla to me. The frosting was topped with a fresh, delicious sweet blueberry! The cake itself had fresh blueberries baked into it to make a delicious blueberry cake. The vanilla part of the cake doesn't have much flavor, but the blueberries mixed into it give it a great, natural blueberry taste of fresh blueberries-- not artificial at all! Overall Taste Rating: 4.5 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture:
The frosting is creamy and thick, and melts happily into sugary goodness on my tongue. The cake texture is not dry but not super moist, but with yummy softened blueberries baked right in they leave moist, sweet delicious blue pockets throughout the cake. Overall Taste Rating: 4.5 out of 5 sprinkles.

Aesthetic:
A uniquely conical appearance, with icing heaped ontop generously in a conical heap about three inches high, dotted on top with a fresh blueberry! Overall Aesthetic Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles.

Satisfaction: My first blueberry flavored cupcake, and I really liked it! I love blueberry muffins, but this was definitely a cupcake and not a muffin-- it was vanilla cake fit for a cupcake with fresh bluberries baked into it, with lots of sweet frosting and topped with a fresh blueberry. Innovative and delicious! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4.5 out of 5 sprinkles

Kyotofu Coconut-Shiso Mini Cupcake

Kyotofu Mini Coconut-Shiso Cupcake, about $1.08 (3 for $3.25), http://www.kyotofu-nyc.com/, 9th Ave and 48th Street

Taste:
The taste is similar to a coconut macaroon, but with an extra kick from the shiso herbs that are baked in-- the shiso herbs are strong, sort of like mint or basil-- the tastes are complex but not unpleasant. It's intriguing, and very savory-- it might be really good as a bread, but it's not at all like a cupcake, much more savory than sweet. It's interesting, though, and innovative. Overall Taste Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Texture: Dry, chewy, reminds me of a lot of a coconut macaroon... not optimal for a cupcake. Overall Texture Rating: 2 out of 5 sprinkles.

Aesthetic: Cute for its miniatureness, but otherwise, pretty ugly... unadorned, unfrosted, lopsided... Overall Aesthetic Rating: 1 out of 5 sprinkles

Satisfaction: I was glad I tried something with such a unique flavor, and it really was interesting, and I was glad to have tried it. But, it's not something that will satisfy a cupcake craving, and it's not something I'd purchase again. Overall Satisfaction Rating: 2 out of 5 sprinkles.

Kyotofu Green Tea Mini Cupcake

Kyotofu Mini Green Tea Cupcake, about $1.08 (3 for $3.25), http://www.kyotofu-nyc.com/, 9th Ave and 48th Street

So, in my book, a cupcake without any sort of frosting isn't really a cupcake at all-- it's either a muffin, or a loaf cake, or a souffle, but not a cupcake-- but since Kyotofu brands and markets their frosting-less cupcakes as "cupcakes," they have consented to the jurisdiction of CupcakeRankings.com and it is my duty to sample them. It should also be noted that I'm a person who loves green tea, though I've never had a green tea baked good before.

Taste: This tastes like a muffin. It's not sweet enough to be a cupcake or a cake. The green tea adds complexity to the otherwise bland taste, but it's unpleasant and doesn't work well for a sweet. It has a slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall Taste Rating: 1 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture: Very moist and slightly chewy. Overall Texture Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Aesthetic: This is one ugly "cupcake" with its bright green hue and uneven brown icing-less top. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 0 out of 5 sprinkles.

Satisfaction: This was totally gross. I love green tea, but I'll stick with drinking it in liquid form, not in baked good form. Overall Satisfaction Rating: 1 out of 5 sprinkles.

Kyotofu Mini Chocolate Souffle Cupcake

Kyotofu Mini Chocolate Souffle Cupcake, about $1.08 (3 for $3.25), http://www.kyotofu-nyc.com/, 9th Ave and 48th Street

Taste: So there's no frosting, just cake, and it doesn't even taste like cake-- it tastes just like a brownie. Very rich, very chocolatey, tastes excellent for a brownie, but tastes nothing like a cupcake! Overall Taste Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Texture: Moist, chewy, gooey, fudgy, rich, dense-- texture is just like a brownie. The texture is perfect for a brownie, but not for a cupcake! Overall Texture Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Aesthetic: Kind of ugly!! No frosting, a little lopsided, cute in its miniatureness, but not the sort of pretty thing that jumps out at you for its aesthetic beauty and would look beautiful to serve for a special occasion. 1 out of 5 sprinkles.

Satisfaction: If I were rating brownies or souffles, I might rate this high. But this had nothing to do with cupcakes at all! They advertise that New York magazine voted this New York's #1 cupcake, but I'm not really sure how they came to that conclusion, because it's really not even a cupcake at all, its a brownie baked into a cupcake lining! I vote this a complete fraud! 1 out of 5 sprinkles

Junior's Vanilla Buttercream and Vanilla Royal Icing on Vanilla Cake

Junior's Vanilla Cake with Vanilla Buttercream and Vanilla Royal Icing, Junior's Bakery, Grand Central, $3.50, http://www.juniorscheesecake.com/

Junior's Bakery sells gorgeous cupcakes that come in a vast rainbow of colors, but the multi-colors (yellow, green, pink, blue, purple, etc!) are all vanilla flavored (they also sell a chocolate frosted and a red velvet). I chose a yellow colored vanilla, and the application of frosting and sprinkles is generous and gorgeously and artistically done! I also have to tell you something AWESOME about Junior's cupcakes-- The top of the cake is first frosted in a white vanilla fondant or royal icing, and then rainbow sprinkles are pressed around the edges to make a border, and then a generous heaping of buttercream is swirled high on top of the rainbow sprinkle border atop the vanilla royal icing. So its a double dose of two types of icing, generously piled and thoroughly coated. That is going the extra mile!

Taste: We have a few elements at play here! The cake is a white cake, not overly flavorful, but very pleasant, light and very slightly sweet, similar to a sponge cake (maybe it is a sponge cake, for all I know). The buttercream frosting is also lightly sweet-- sweet enough that it's a delicious frosting, but not so sweet that it's too much to handle. There is a slight aftertaste to the frosting, which I attribute to the color dye that made it yellow. I'm really sensitive to aftertastes from artificial chemicals and color dyes, so for me, the aftertaste is definitely a problem. The royal icing coating the entire cupcake below the buttercream is delicious-- pure, white, sweet. The sweetness of the royal icing adds something important, because the cake and buttercream are both light and not ultra-sweet, so the extra sweetness of the royal icing adds a nice sugar kick without being over-the-top. The tastes here are so good, but I have to deduct a point for the slight aftertaste from the color dye in the buttercream-- my advice would be to choose the naturally white colored cupcake if you go to Junior's, and hopefully avoid any color dye aftertaste issues! Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles!!

Texture:
The white cake is fluffy and moist-- the perfect cake texture in my opinion, because it's moist and yet the fluffiness gives the cake a lightness because it's moist without being dense. The texture of the buttercream is incredibly light as well-- the icing must be whipped, and it amazes me how a buttercream can be so light and fluffy so it doesn't feel dense at all. The frosting just melts in my mouth! The royal icing below the buttercream that coats the top of the cake is firm and hard, as royal icing is intended to cement the sprinkles, but softens in my mouth and coats my tongue with sugary goodness. It is perfectly smooth! Overall Texture Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!! (I wish I could give it SIX sprinkles, all the textures were perfect!)

Aesthetic:
This is just a spectacular looking cupcake, undeniably, and the array of cupcakes sold together from Junior's was really a fantastic sight in the beautiful rainbow of color options. The system of applying royal icing to the cupcake, applying a border of sprinkles, and then letting the royal icing dry and harden to hold the sprinkles in place is ingenius and gorgeous-- no sprinkles at risk of falling off these cupcakes! And the generous heaping of perfectly swirled, beautifully colored pastel buttercream in the center of the sprinkle border is so pleasing to the eyes. These cupcakes are large, the cake is perfectly golden, the proportions are perfect and there's not a thing messy, lopsided or awry with the appearance of this cupcake. Gorgeous! 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!!

Satisfaction:
This was a great cupcake. Truly, my only problem with it was the slight aftertaste I experienced from the color dye, and I'm aware that I'm more sensitive to aftertastes of that kind than many other people are. Overall, the tastes and textures were perfect, the cupcake was beautiful, the price was reasonable for such a big cupcake, and the multiple types of icing and royal icing system for cementing the sprinkles really pleased me. The staff at Junior's on the top floor of Grand Central who sold me the cupcake were also so nice and friendly, and when I purchased the cupcake told me that they thought they had the best cupcakes in the city and I would love it. And they were right about me loving it! This cupcake was also lighter in every aspect than most other cupcakes I've reviewed, which are richer and denser, and so the light whipped icing and light fluffy sponge cake didn't leave me feeling heavy and overly full after eating the cupcake. I felt just right! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!

What a beautiful cupcake!! So gorgeous and satisfying it just deserves a few more pictures!!

Zaro's Boston Cream Cupcake

Zaro's Bread Basket Boston Cream Cupcake, $2.95, Grand Central Terminal, http://www.zaro.com/

I love Boston Cream pie, I love Boston Cream donuts, but how would I enjoy a Boston Cream cupcake? This is my first one ever, and although I did not enjoy it, I blame the cupcake itself more than the concept-- I think Boston Cream cupcakes can be delicious if well executed, and I'll make it a personal goal to find a good one and let you know where to find it!

Taste: The chocolate icing on top is not at all sweet, but is richly chocolatey, though tastes like dark chocolate which is not typical for boston cream. The custard inside is lightly sweet and egg-y, and has a good taste for boston cream filling, a traditional custard taste that is just right and similar to tastes I've experienced in boston cream pies-- The taste of the cream filling is truly delicious, although unfortunately its awful texture ruins it (see below), but on pure taste alone, excellent custard. The cupcake taste is pretty good too-- yellow cake, slightly sweet but not too sweet, a nice complement to the custard inside. Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture: OK, the texture is this cupcake is just BIZARRE! The cake is a little dry, which isn't the craziest thing in the world, but the icing and the custard are RUBBERY. The cream is gelatinous, and when pulled on with a fork does not break and stays firmly together when pulled on, stretching like a rubber band! The texture is so weird and creepy and is grossing me out!! The chocolate icing on top also sticks together and comes off in one piece when tugged at with a fork, but in a less gross way-- the top frosting is similar to the texture of the type of frosting on top of a black & white cookie, thick and fudgy. But the texture of the custard filling is seriously revolting, custards should not be gelatinous and rubbery all at the same time. Gross! Overall Texture Rating: 0 out of 5 sprinkles

Aesthetic: The aerial view of this cupcake is nice, a layer of smooth dark colored chocolate frosting with pretty white stripes marbling the top. From the side, the appears the chocolate frosting is atop puff pastry that sits like a lid atop of the custard frosting, revealing the cream inside. It's not perfectly symmetrical or precise, but it is charming enough. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 3 out of 5 Sprinkles

Satisfaction:
Although I was impressed with the custard taste (and the custard quantity was generous, because in addition to the middle being filled with custard inside, there was also a thick layer of custard directly below the chocolate frosting layer and on top of the cake), the texture of this cupcake was seriously GROSS, mostly the texture of the custard. I could pick up the entire layer of custard on my fork and it just dangled there in one solid piece and jiggled. It was disgusting. And doesn't custard need to be refrigerated? This cupcake was definitely not refrigerated, I hope I don't get sick from this. The texture was seriously problematic. Please see below for a photo of the custard dangling from my fork after I pulled on it to break it apart and it refused to budge but instead stretched out like a rubberband:

As you can see, it dangles from my fork in a congealed mass. And although the photo doesn't reveal it, the consistency was rubbery. Custard should not behave in such ways!!! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 0 out of 5 sprinkles

Sage (sold by Dean & DeLuca) Hostess Style Chocolate Cupcake

Sage Hostess-Style Cupcake from Dean & DeLuca, $5.00,
http://www.sagegeneralstore.com/ and http://www.deandeluca.com

I have an amazing recipe that I use to make delicious Hostess-style filled cupcakes at home, so I don't usually buy them elsewhere because few cupcakes can live up to my home-baked ones, but as the Cupcake Connoisseur it is my duty to sample what else is out there! So, I tried this Hostess-style cupcake from Sage.

Taste: The chocolate icing is bitter, and not sweet at all, although probably made with real bittersweet chocolate and not cocoa powder, judging by the taste. The cake is also slightly bitter and has not the slightest hint of sweetness and barely any chocolatey taste. The vanilla cream inside the cupcake is bland and not tasty-- it's the same white cream as in the zig-zag on top of the cupcake, and its somewhat tasteless and gritty. A Hostess style cupcake isn't meant to be super sweet, and my personal chocolate icing recipe does use real bittersweet chocolate, but my vanilla cream filling is really sweet and so together they strike a nice balance. In contrast, the Sage cupcake has bittersweet icing, bitter cake, and tasteless cream filling, and so together there's no sweetness to the cupcake. Blech! Overall Taste Rating: 0 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture: The cake texture is dry, not at all moist like the Sage Vanilla Cupcake, but instead very dry and maybe even a bit stale. The chocolate icing has a good texture despite the bad taste, very smooth and silky on my tongue. There is barely ANY vanilla cream filling in the middle of the cupcake, and the filling (which is also the zigzag on top) is VERY gritty. Blech! Overall Texture Rating: 2 out of 5 sprinkles

Aesthetic: Aesthetics is the only place this cupcake is going to win any major points with me. It's bigger than the traditional commercial Hostess cupcakes, with dark chocolatey colored cake and rich, glossy dark chocolate colored frosting, and a cute white zig-zag across the top, albeit sloppily applied, but the cupcake has that appealing homemade look as opposed to the from-the-box mass-produced look. The exterior appearance of this cupcake is what compelled me to buy it in the first place! Overall Aesthetic Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles!

Satisfaction: In addition to the fact that this cupcake didn't taste very good and had a bad texture, there was barely ANY chocolate icing on the top, although I can accept the fact that a Hostess cupcake by design only has a thin layer of icing across the top. BUT, what is unforgiveable is that there was hardly ANY cream filling inside the cupcake! And topped off by the racket price of $5.00 for this abomination of a cupcake, my satisfaction was practically negative! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 0 out of 5 sprinkles

Two Little Red Hens: Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Frosting

Red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting from Two Little Red Hens (http://www.twolittleredhens.com), purchased at Food Emporium for $3.99

Taste: I am in HEAVEN right now! The cream cheese frosting is hands down one of the best I've ever tasted. Sweet yet tangy and rich, I wish words could describe how this tastes! The red velvet cake is tasty too-- red velvet is interesting because, although red in color, it's supposed to be chocolate cake with red color dye. With eyes closed, the cake definitely did taste like chocolate cake. Overall Taste Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!!

Texture: The texture on the frosting is almost as incredible as the taste-- rich and thick and yet it just melts in my mouth. I could eat a vat of just this frosting, I swear!!! The cake texture is good, pretty soft and moist, but for red velvet cake, it's not velvety enough to earn 5 sprinkles. Overall Texture Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles!

Aesthetic:
The aerial view of the cupcake shows how precisely the icing is applied. How do they achieve such a perfect swirl??!!!! The red color is vibrant, and the dusting of red velvet crumbs in the center of the white frosting adds a beautiful touch. Overall Aesthetic Rasting: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!

Satisfaction:
Overall, the icing on this cupcake was the best thing I've ever tasted, and the cake was good but not wowing me on an exceptional level. Mostly, I was craving MORE icing-- not that the icing on the cupcake was exactly paltry, but I was just desperately left wanting MORE icing, which led to less than 100% satisfaction. I also feel a slight stomachache coming on, but that is probably my fault for violating my 3 bite rule and eating all of the icing off the top of the cupcake! This is a dangerous line of work! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Overall Cupcake Ranking: 18 Sprinkles (out of 20 possible)

Three Bite Tasting Process

Some of my readers have asked me whether I eat the entirety of all the cupcakes I rank. The answer is a vehement "no"! Any cupcake scoring below 15 Sprinkles is a waste of calories, in my opinion, and one of the reasons this website is such a useful tool for readers is to learn which cupcakes are worth splurging on! So I'm willing to take one for the team and sample as many as I can for you.

When I sample a cupcake, I generally take three bites-- First, a bite with just frosting, where I savor that in my mouth and assess its flavors and texture. Second, I take a bite with just cake, with which I do the same. Finally, for my third bite, I have the frosting and cake together in the way a cupcake is intended to be enjoyed.

It's a sign of a top-rating cupcake when I just want to keep eating it and don't want to stop!

Magnolia: Miniature Vanilla Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Miniature Vanilla Frosting on Vanilla Cake Cupcake from Magnolia

Magnolia Bakery was giving away miniature cupcakes today in Rockefeller Center, and I happened to walk by just at the right time! I didn't have my digital camera with me at the time, so I snapped cell phone pictures of it prior to consumption (sorry about the poor quality!). My teensy treat was free, but I was told you can purchase the minis at Magnolia (http://www.magnoliacupcakes.com/) at a dozen for $20. (Either oddly or adorably, I can't decide which, the dozen mini-cupcakes for $20 are sold in a cardboard egg-carton. Assuming they're re-using egg cartons from the eggs used to make the cupcakes, which is what it looked like, I suppose it is an eco-friendly way to recycle them).

Taste: Is it just me, or do all things taste better miniature? The vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting mini-cupcake was just far more delicious in its miniature form than in the full-size version! Although the icing was still too sweet while the cake was not sweet enough, in bite-size form perhaps I didn't have enough time to critique the problems with the cupcake's taste before it was all gone! When I was eating the full size version of the same, I discussed how I felt sick after a few bites and had no desire to eat any more, but perhaps the mini-size is the answer for me, because the two-bite cupcake tasted a lot better! Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Texture:
You might call me crazy, but the cake in the mini-Magnolia was moister than the standard-size Magnolia cake. Really! And the icing was smooth and thick. Overall Texture Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Aesthetic:
Okay, I might be biased in favor of all things miniature, but this cupcake was just ADORABLE. Mini-cupcake just delighted me! It looked much like a Magnolia big cupcake that only scores a 3 sprinkles for aesthetics, yet scaled down in a mini-me version, it was extra cute! It earns an extra point for miniature-ness! Overall Aesthetic Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles!

Satisfaction:
So on the one hand, a miniatue cupcake is gone in two bites and doesn't fully satisfy the way a regular-size cupcake can. But on the other hand, a miniature cupcake is sometimes JUST the thing you need to satisfy that desire for delicious cupcakeness without expanding your waistline and overeating goodies. And something about miniature things is extra satisfying because they're just so cute. I was absolutely delighted to learn that such miniature cupcakes from Magnolia existed, and I swear I had a smile on my face for hours after that happenstance discovery and my free mini-cupcake consumption. I truly did feel satisfied even though it was so tiny! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles!

Sage (sold by Dean & DeLuca) Vanilla Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Sage Cupcake from Dean & DeLuca in Rockefeller Center, Vanilla Frosting on Vanilla Cake

http://www.sagegeneralstore.com/ and http://www.deandeluca.com, a whopping $5 from Dean & DeLuca

Taste: The vanilla frosting is tangy and almost tastes lemony, but it's different and I like it. The cake has a nice, buttery flavor to it. Together, they blend nicely-- I'm trying to pinpoint the exact tastes at play, but my mouth is mostly just saying "YUM!" Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles!

Texture: The frosting is very light, perhaps whipped, and very smooth. The cake receives exceptional credit for being super moist and soft. Overall Texture Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!!!

Aesthetic: This is a fairly big cupcake-- smaller than a Crumbs, but bigger than a Magnolia or a Buttercup. And I know it looks a little messed up in the photo, but I have to confess that the smeared off icing was 100% entirely my fault because it got mussed in transit, but when I purchased it the icing was applied very smoothly and the aesthetic was good, although the icing was applied thinly and not heaped as high as Crumbs, Magnolia and Buttercup heap their icing. Something about the sheen of the icing on this cupcake appealed to me-- the icing of many cupcakes I've sampled isn't so nice and glossy. The cake was also more yellow and true to a deep yellow cake than the pale golden cakes I've sampled before. I was very pleased with its appearance, and very upset that I tipped it over in its container after I left the store and smeared the icing. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!

Satisfaction: There was one big problem with this cupcake-- the cost! When I saw this cupcake was $5, I wouldn't have purchased it if not for my devotion to cupcake sampling for CupcakeRankings.com. But for $5, this cupcake had better be extra special. And though it was very good, I'm just not sure it was worth $5. It might have been good enough to be worth $3.50, but for $5, I wouldn't buy one again. I assume Dean & DeLuca is responsible for the markup and not Sage, but come on, it wasn't filled with gold. Overall Satisfaction Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Buttercup Bake Shop Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Buttercup Bake Shop Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake
buttercupbakeshop.com, $2.25 each

Taste: The frosting is very cocoa powdery and very buttery, and not as sweet as Magnolia or Crumbs' chocolate frosting, and tastes less like real chocolate. The cake was unremarkable, not possessed of any distinct flavors but not unpleasant... not particularly sweet. The frosting and cake together are not sweet enough for me-- it tastes too much of unsweetened cocoa powder and butter. Overall Taste Rating: 2 out of 5 sprinkles.

Texture:
Happily, the frosting's texture is very smooth and buttery. The cake's texture was also not particularly good or bad-- not moist but not dry, somewhere in between, but generally unremarkable. Overall Texture Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles.

Aesthetic: The chocolate frosting has an interestingly light color compared to the frosting from Crumbs or Magnolia, which you'd think would connote more sugar in the recipe, and yet their chocolate frosting was the least sweet! The cupcake also unfortunately looked hideously deformed, as you can see in the picture above, although I liked that it looked like it had lots of icing before I tasted the icing and was underwhelmed. The cake was golden and the cupcake was even, but the icing was applied sloppily albeit generously. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles

Satisfaction Rating:
The cupcake was just didn't do it for me. There was no pleasant chocolate taste like in Magnolia and Crumbs' chocolate frostings. There was nothing extra to redeem this cupcake either. Overall Satisfaction Rating: 2 out of 5 sprinkles

Crumbs Bake Shop Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Crumbs Bakery Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake, $2.95 each, http://www.crumbs.com/

Taste: The icing is sweet but chocolatey, with excellent flavor-- very similar to Magnolia's chocolate buttercream, but without that mouth-full-of-confectioner's-sugar taste. The cake is the same delicious vanilla cake that I gave such favorable reviews to in the Crumbs Vanilla-on-Vanilla Cupcake review-- flavorful, vanilla-y, delicious. The taste of the vanilla cake blended together with the chocolate frosting hits the perfect note. Overall Taste Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!
Texture: The icing is creamy and smooth, the cake moist and soft, as I've been coming to count on from Crumbs! Overall Texture Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!
Aesthetic: The only place I can possibly find fault with the cupcake is in the aesthetics department-- as you can see from the photo, the cupcake was a bit lopsided, and the icing was unevenly applied and there is a slight scuff on the surface. I noticed this as I was paying for my cupcakes and wished the gentleman helping me in the store knew I was planning to critique the cupcakes so he'd offer me one of the more presentable cupcakes available in the display, but alas, my identity as the Cupcake Connoisseur cannot be known. I am forced to judge each cupcake as I find them, and so despite this cupcake's grand scale, beautiful golden colored cake and chocolate-hued frosting, and cheery inch-high band of densely packed rainbow sprinkles, the sloppiness in its execution loses it a critical point. Overall aesthetic ranking: 4 out of 5 sprinkles.
Satisfaction: Like with the Crumbs vanilla, I was surprised to find there was no extra shot of filling hidden inside, as I've experienced with many of their cupcakes in the past, but luckily the large heaping of icing provided on top more than did the trick. This cupcake was rich and satisfying, and so big that eating half or less was enough to satisfy, and the rest could be saved for later or shared with friends. Completely yummy! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!

More on Cupcake Rankings Methodology

My cupcake ratings system uses four categories, each worth 25% of the total score. I want to explain my methodology and why I feel this system provides the optimal process by which a cupcake's superiority can be determined.

The first category is taste, with a maximum possible taste score of "5 sprinkles." Clearly, taste is of utmost importance to cupcake consumers-- no one wants to eat a cupcake that isn't tasty! Some critics might argue that taste should be worth more than 25% of a cupcake's total score. However, few cupcake-eaters are consciously aware of the fact that texture is equally important to taste in the enjoyment of cupcake consumption. A bad texture can overshadow and ruin even the best-tasting confections. For example, a cupcake with a perfectly flavored frosting and cake will not be enjoyable to eat if the frosting is runny and oily and the cake is dry and stale. The best of flavors cannot compensate for bad texture. Conversely, a less ideal flavor can be enhanced by perfectly smooth, fluffy frosting that melts right on your tongue and moist, soft cake. Thus, texture is also worth 25% of the total score, with a maximum possible texture score of "5 sprinkles."

Taste and texture account for most of the "mouth happiness" aspects of cupcake consumption. However, people are gifted with five senses-- in addition to taste, we're able to smell, touch, hear and see. Pretty much all cupcakes smell good, they're generally quiet, and if you touch even the best cupcake you will likely want to go wash your hands, so those categories can be ignored. However, sight is a powerful sense, and people associate how food looks with whether they'll want to eat it. Especially because cupcakes are often served for special occasions and parties and offered to guests, it's important for a cupcake to look good when arrayed on a platter or stand as part of an event's decor. Even if a cupcake is only being used for personal and immediate consumption, an attractive cupcake is more appealing than an unattractive cupcake. Baking involves not just perfecting the taste and texture of recipes, but also decorating the baked goods beautifully. So, aesthetics is worth another 25%, with a maximum possible aesthetic score of "5 sprinkles."

There is a certain je ne sais quoi about cupcakes that perhaps can't be fully appreciated or described by taste, texture and aesthetics alone. Perhaps the cupcake is so creative and original that it combines elements and flavors you had never before conceived and leaves you feeling positively delighted by the innovation. Perhaps you enjoy a cupcake more because it was delicious and then you learn it was only 100 calories, and low-fat! Perhaps the cupcake left you feeling intensely satisfied because it was filled in the middle with an extra shot of frosting that took you that extra step into cupcake heaven. Whatever those little "extras" are in a particular cupcake, they contribute to your satisfaction after eating that cupcake, which is highly important because a cupcake worth eating is always satisfying. There is simply no point in consuming dissatisfying food. So, for a final 25%, satisfaction is worth a maximum possible satisfaction score of "5 sprinkles," which allows room to account for additional factors that might be at play in configuring cupcake enjoyment. However, it should be noted that taste, texture and aesthetics can all contribute towards and account for the satisfaction felt after eating a cupcake. So, although "satisfaction" technically accounts for 25%, if you have a satisfaction level of 100% but the reason for your satisfaction is based 100% on the great taste of the cupcake, the satisfaction score of "5 sprinkles" is really due to taste, meaning taste can account for 50% of the rating. This flexible satisfaction rating factor can allow up to 50% of the total score to be based on taste, or 50% of the total score to be based on texture, or 50% of the total score to be based on aesthetics. Usually, the reason for satisfaction or dissatisfaction with a cupcake is based on a combination of taste, texture, aesthetics and additional supplemental factors, and so the end result is that the satisfaction score takes into account some percentage of each.

Buttercup Bake Shop Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcake

Buttercup Bake Shop Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcake, buttercupbakeshop.com, $2.25 each

I love PB&J, but would I love it in cupcake form?

Taste: Pleasantly delicious! The icing had a distinct peanut butter flavor, and yet was also sweet and was clearly icing and not peanut butter-- I would guess they took vanilla icing and blended it with real peanut butter to create the flavor. The vanilla cake was unremarkable, but it didn't need to be, because the awesome peanut flavor of the icing and the yummy jelly found in the center of the cupcake made the cake just our bread-like vehicle for PB&J deliciousness! I think the jelly in the center was grape, and it was sweet but balanced nicely by the not-very-sweet cake and peanut butter frosting. Overall Taste Rating: 5 out of 5 sprinkles!!
Texture: The icing unfortunately had a major grittiness due to the fact that real peanuts were ground into it (or chunky peanut butter was used in its creation)! Points for authenticity, but the grittiness ruined the icing's texture a little bit for me. The jelly in the center nicely moistened the cake, which otherwise was a little dry. Overall Texture Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles
Aesthetic: From the outside, unfortunately, this was not the most attractive cupcake-- it just didn't look very appetizing. I think the pictures above demonstrate this cupcake's plainness and lack of beauty. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 2 out of 5 sprinkles
Satisfaction: My main complaint was that there was not enough jelly in the middle! I was left craving more jelly, and after eating the delicious jelly center was left with a PB cupcake lacking in J! But the jelly-included bites were utterly delish! Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles

Overall Cupcake Ranking: 15 Sprinkles (out of 20 possible)

Magnolia Bakery Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake

Magnolia Bakery Chocolate Frosting on Vanilla Cake, magnoliabakery.com, $2.50 each

Taste: The chocolate frosting was very tasty-- sweet but the sweetness was tempered by the cocoa powder for a pleasant overall flavor, although savoring the frosting in my mouth I could distinctly taste the components that made up the icing: butter, confectioner's sugar and cocoa powder. But the vanilla cake was disappointing-- dry, flavorless, not sweet at all. Luckily, eaten together, the chocolate frosting taste was overpowering, and therefore quite tasty! Overall Taste Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles
Texture: The chocolate frosting's texture was excellent-- smooth, creamy, not too dense, light and soft. The cake texture unfortunately was dry and crumbly and really ruined things. Overall Texture Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles
Aesthetic: Although the cupcakes have that cute homemade look that makes everyone nostalgic about childhood cupcake-eating, the execution on this cupcake was sloppy-- the cake was lopided and the icing wasn't applied particularly evenly. The chocolate frosting did have a nice, rich chocolate color that I appreciated, and from an aerial view the frosting was beautifully swirled. Overall Aesthetic Rating: 3 out of 5 sprinkles
Satisfaction: Overall, the yumminess of the chocolate frosting is what saved this cupcake and led to my decent satisfaction with it, although the cake part was borderline inedible. Overall Satisfaction Rating: 4 out of 5 sprinkles
